When skydiving first hit the public radar in the mid-20th century, the only people who thought of it as a sport were those who risked their lives for a living. Since then, the sky adventure has evolved. Thanks to stronger construction of parachutes and highly regulated safety protocols, modern skydiving allows the enthusiast to careen through the sky with only a passing thought of the dangers inherent in the sport. In fact, the sport of formation skydiving, where half a dozen or more jumpers create beautiful patterns in the sky, is increasing in popularity every year. Learn how you can join the fun of skydiving.

Skydiving in the Collective Subconscious
To understand the appeal of skydiving, we have to ask ourselves what makes us as a species that longs for excitement. Most would agree that the feelings of euphoria and “being alive” that we get from the adrenaline rush plays a large part in why we enjoy it. This could be a call back to our early days as a species, when simply existing was a daily battle. Whatever the reason, it only takes a glimpse into our culture to notice the popularity skydiving has garnered over the decades. In fact, as the sport becomes more and more regulated, the safety of the sport is one of the least of your worries when deciding whether to try skydiving or not.
At Skydiving.com St. Louis, we help you capture the enthusiasm of being human. Travel up to fourteen thousand feet in the sky to give you the experience of a lifetime. A minute of Free Fall and up to five minutes of pure euphoric contemplation under the canopy. You have no reason not to call and learn more.
Follow the Mighty Mississippi—From the Air
Most well known for the 630-foot Arch that watches over the city, St. Louis, MO, is a city of rolling prairies, a boundary between the hills of the eastern portion of the United States and the flat land that spreads to the west. The Mississippi River is the anaconda of the region, the area’s biggest river that winds north to south along the Eastern border of Missouri. If you are lucky, you will get to see the Mississippi as only a few souls ever have—from the skies ten thousand feet above.
From this height, chances are you will see the river as a wavy line, with the city as one large, indiscriminate grey-white shape split by occasional patches of green. The Gateway Arch sits in the middle of the largest patch of green to the immediate east of downtown.
There are other sights to see as you approach the Earth. You will have nearly five minutes to enjoy the view once you deploy the parachute, and in that time, you will no doubt strive to see the city in a different perspective. Once below a thousand feet, you will have no trouble seeing Busch Stadium, the home of the St. Louis Cardinals. Keep an eye out for Forest Park as well, the site of the 1904 World’s Fair. You can even enjoy a glimpse of one of many sculptures in the City Garden.

It’s often said that the Tandem skydive is the most popular method of skydiving for the first-timer. In a Tandem skydive, you are harnessed to an instructor or Jumpmaster. This removes much of the stress from the jump since you don’t have to worry about timing the parachute deployment or landing in the proper “zone.” Instead, you can focus on the beauty of your surroundings, the roar of the wind in your ears and the sensation of floating above it all. Skydiving.com St. Louis recommends Tandem skydiving packages for customers from all over Missouri and beyond.
Your Tandem Experience: A Timeline
Once you’ve made a reservation to take that jump on the Tandem line, the day will approach quickly. As your anxiety mounts, take the time to prepare for your big day. Here are some tips to get you thinking about your adventure:
Clothing: Wear clothing for your jump that is appropriate for outdoor wear. You shouldn’t wear a dress (for obvious reasons) or very short shorts since the straps to the harness can cause irritation to bare skin. Watch the weather before you leave for the jump and wear layers accordingly. The higher you get in the atmosphere, the colder it gets. You don’t want to be too hot or cold during your jump, as that will take away from your experience.
Memories: Consider bringing a camera with you to the Tandem jump. While skydiving offers excellent videography packages that will capture your jump and your interactions with other enthusiasts, you may want to snap some photos of the world around you during your training or the plane ride. For many people a Tandem jump is the first experience they have with an airplane that you won’t typically be able to capture during normal day-to-day activities.
Physical: One of the worst things in the world is getting excited to do something and then feeling bad the day of the adventure. If you have an illness or bug, cancel your trip and reschedule for a better time. If you wake up to a nervous stomach or fear you might have problems with motion sickness, consider investing in an anti-nausea medication or remedy before you leave for your adventure. Most local pharmacies carry an anti-nausea liquid or acupressure bands to help you avoid the butterflies during your trip.
Comfort: During a Tandem skydiving jump, in particular, you may find yourself in close quarters with strangers. If you are the type of person who embarrasses easily or is subconscious about the way you appear to others, make sure to take a shower and use an antiperspirant before leaving for your jump. Chances are you will be too busy to care once you reach your destination, but it can mean the difference between feeling awkward or uncomfortable and truly enjoying your time in the sky.
The Experience of your Tandem Jump
Before you even set foot in the plane, you will have to complete a short training course, known as a pre-briefing. In this fifteen to thirty minute course you will cram your brain full of information about the plane, the parachute and the process that you’ll have to follow once you get into the air. You won’t have to worry about pulling the ripcord to deploy the chute, but you will still be expected to know what to do when landing and in the event that the first parachute fails to deploy (don’t panic!).
After learning the ins and outs of the Tandem skydiving experience, you will board the plane. Traveling the 13,000 feet in the air is likely to start your heart beating faster. If you are prone to sweating, this is the time you’ll notice it. The most important thing you can do right now is breathe and soak in the feeling of being in the moment. Don’t think about the jump or the landing or anything else. Take a moment to look out the plane windows if you are next to them. Try to see how far the horizon stretches. This will take your mind off the fear and encourage a sense of wonder and awe instead.
Find your courage and call 314-269-0080 for your first taste of Tandem skydiving. We look forward to hearing from you!
The demand for professionally trained skydivers may not be as high as that for trained nurses, but there is a need for those fearless few who are not afraid to jump from a plane at a moment’s notice. The entertainment industry alone capitalizes on the adrenaline junkies of the world to bring their passion for danger and excitement into the theaters. Documentary filmmakers utilize skydivers for landscape photography. Even scientists studying climate change can benefit from the skills of the skydiver.
Skydiving.com St. Louis partners offer an intensive training program for those who wish to carry their hobby of skydiving into another realm. With the Accelerated Free Fall program (AFF), you can learn everything you need to know about skydiving on your own. When you’ve completed this multi-level course, you are considered a professional by the United States Parachute Association (USPA) and can skydive at any of the organization’s A-level drop zones across the country. It takes a progression of 25 jumps to reach this pinnacle and make that final leap.
Skydiving.com St. Louis recommends a progressive program of eight levels of AFF training, each of which culminates in an assessment jump. This jump shows your instructor that you successfully learned the technique covered in that particular lesson and can implement it in future jumps.
Among the subjects covered in the eight levels:
Body positioning: You will learn the “belly-down” position, where your arms and legs sprawl above and you lead with your body. This is the most stable position and ensures that you stay in control during the jump.
Being safe in an emergency: No matter how much you prepare for the jump, there is always a chance for something to go wrong. You will learn how to safely pack your chute and what to do if you encounter problems during a jump.
Tracking: One of the more important moves during a jump is being able to see where it is you’re going and go in that direction. This is vital to get to the landing zone.
Turning: There are plenty of opportunities to learn complex flips and acrobatics, but you also learn simple turns.
Landing: It’s not a successful jump until you’ve landed in the right spot. You will learn how to listen to radio communication to maneuver into the landing zone and how to physically land without falling.
Exiting the plane: Yes, there is a procedure for jumping from the plane, even if you see differently in the movies. You will learn how to position yourself at the plane door for a successful leap.
Deploying the Parachute: Probably the most important aspect of jumping solo is deploying the parachute correctly. You will learn the anatomy of the parachute and what to do if you need to use the automatic or reserve function.
An AFF jump is a solo endeavor, but in reality, you are not truly alone. When you jump from the plane, you will be accompanied by one or two instructors who will guide you to the point where you deploy the parachute. One will help you make a safe landing. As an AFF student, these guides will assist less with each jump, but for the first-time jumper and those who only plan to jump recreationally, these instructors will be your constant companions.
Accelerated Free Fall training is intended for the person who wants to incorporate skydiving into his or her life permanently. There are options to take a single AFF course, but once you start learning more about skydiving, you will probably want to reach the highest potential in the sport.
While most people are familiar with the Accelerated Free Fall course and Tandem skydiving, they don’t have a clue what Tandem Progression is in skydiving terminology. Tandem Progression training is offered at a few of our affiliate centers as an extra option for those who want to complete an Accelerated Free Fall certification but need the added benefit of patience. If you have a fear of heights or a problem with committing to solo skydiving right away, Tandem Progression combines Tandem skydiving with the AFF method.
Like any other skydiving option, Tandem Progression skydiving starts with a training class where you’ll learn how to jump safely. Your first three jumps are in Tandem with a Jumpmaster. With each jump, you’ll have much more instruction and a little more responsibility, maybe ending with you pulling the parachute cord. When you’ve built up your confidence, you’re ready to transition to the AFF program. This is not the fastest method to obtain your USPA certification, but slow-and-steady still gets to the finish line, and in a way that’s comfortable for you.

We live in a visual society. Television, movies, art and home videos capture all aspects of human life in pixelated form. People don’t even go to the coffee shop anymore without bringing their iPhone to capture the moment. So, of course, you’ll want to record your skydiving adventure and keep it for all eternity. A camera will capture the still moments of your trip, the landscape and the smiles that become frozen in time, but you want something more.
Skydiving.com St. Louis has a variety of video packages to tell you about. Whether you plan to make a scrapbook diary of your adventure or want something you can post on Facebook, we have you covered!
A GoPro is a camera you attach to a helmet, handlebar or other object in order to capture a first-hand experience. For a skydiver who wants to share their journey with loved ones, (and relive the experience from time to time), the GoPro option allows you to get the gritty reality of your adventure on video. Your instructor will strap the camera on and film your jump from close up, emphasizing your expressions and reactions to what’s going on around you. He will film from the moment you stand at the airplane exit to the time you land on the grass.
Sometimes you want to capture your experience as one fluid event, start to finish, and other times you want a more polished approach. The “professional” approach involves a professional videographer jumping along with you. The videographer will capture not just the jump, however – you will be on film from the moment you enter the classroom. Your videographer will record moments for you as you learn and when you’re ready to implement what you learned. If you don’t see him during the jump, chances are he has already landed so he can video your landing from the ground. The videographer will also film you mingling with the other jumpers after the experience is over. This option is perfect if you want a capsulated version of your day that you can put into a memory book or storage drive, or out on social media.

Raffling Skydiving for Corporate Events
One often-missed reason to purchase a gift certificate can save your company a lot of inconvenience and money. If your company is having its yearly corporate picnic, chances are you’ve racked your brain trying to come up with interesting raffle gifts to offer, gifts that the modern worker will actually vie for. Our gift certificates make the perfect grand prize for your raffle, and with their inherent affordability, you don’t have to settle for giving just one away.
We offer gift certificates in any dollar amount, or designated for use in a particular area of skydiving. For example, if your 18-year-old graduate is dying to go skydiving but you don’t want her to do it alone, you can purchase a Tandem skydiving package as her graduation gift instead of fretting about the gift behind closed doors. The gift certificates are also fully transferable between people, usable across our affiliate network of more than 80 centers, and valid for two years after purchase.
