Vernon Davis, a tight end for the Washington Redskins, who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers sixth overall in the 2006 NFL Draft signing a five-year, the highest paid tight end in the NFL at the time, has made another one of his dreams come true.
The sports star, 34, decided back in February to book a plane and four skydivers for the ultimate marriage proposal. Davis explained that he and his fiancee, Kayla, would walk onto a beach while the plane flew overhead. Then, the divers would jump, soar down in their parachutes and land near the couple, where they would each reveal a message on their white T-shirts.
“WILL” on the first. “YOU” on the second. “MARRY” the third and “ME?” on the fourth.
Davis chose Ocean City, Maryland as the location for his unforgettable proposal. Surprisingly, Davis, who grew up in Washington, D.C. and attended the University of Maryland, had never been to the beach, though his fiancee went often when she was growing up, and spoke of taking Davis.
“I told her we were going to an event for one of my former teammates,” Davis said. “She thought we were going to an all-white (attire) gathering. She got dressed, knew we had to be at a certain place at a certain time. Bada-bing, bada-boom.”
After the skydivers unveiled the message on their T-shirts, Davis got on one knee and proposed. Kayla, luckily, said yes.
“I didn’t know what (her reaction) would be. I just expected her to be extremely surprised and she was,” Davis said. “She was happy. She just couldn’t believe it.”
Davis explained that the idea for the proposal just came to him.
“I had a dream about it,” Davis said at training camp. “She showed me some ideas of different proposals a long time ago and right after she showed me that night I had a dream about the skydivers.”
Now, what remains to be seen if the happy couple will celebrate their wedding in high style, perhaps having a skydiving ceremony or a saying “I do” while soaring through the air aboard a hot air balloon.
