You’d be hard pressed to find anyone in 2018 who does not own some version of an action camera. Especially those who routinely participate in extreme sports and activities. Innovations in action cameras of today allow for them to be mounted onto vehicles, surfboards, and skateboards, helmets, practically anywhere. Action cameras are unique in their design which makes them popular with adventure sports enthusiasts the world over. Despite their small size and fragile high definition lenses, these easy to use cameras are seriously tough. Enough so that they are often utilized in the capturing of images in a wide range of scenarios.

It’s not simply their durability that appeals to extreme sports participants, it’s also the wide angle fisheye point of view that allows for a more dynamic rendering of their adventures. The compact nature of action cameras allows for them to be affixed to an individual or their equipment delivering an up close and personal experience unlike any other. These elements may be a few of the reasons that skydivers, in particular, have started using them in the capturing of the video and images.

Currently GoPro is the industry leader in action cameras, however, experts recommend that if you are simply looking to purchase an action camera to record your skydiving adventures, you should invest in the device that performs to your specifications and not simply because the brand may be more popular.

For example, are you going to mount the camera to your helmet? If so then perhaps a bullet camera would be the most effective. For chest mounting, experts recommend a more stabilized boxed designed alternative.

Additionally, consider whether or not you need supplementary features like WiFi technologies, GPS, screens etc. Unless their presence is necessary, leverage the cost of the camera supporting these costly features against the superfluousness of the add-ons.

To provide a more comparative look at some of the more prevalent options dominating the action camera market for 2018, we’ve created a list of the best cameras for skydiving available right now.

Honorable mentions for additional viable options in the recording of equally impressive footage is awarded to: the Yi 4K Action Camera, Yi Lite Action Camera, and the GoPro Hero5 Session.

Our personal recommendations for action camera usage would be to invest slightly more in the Sony X3000. Simply for its value over others in optical stabilization and image quality. Experts have indicated that helmet mounting of the X3000 may be a difficulty therefore, camerflyers are recommended to mount it as they would a traditional camcorder.

Further research indicated that the X3000 has the most effective audio quality for interviewing tandem participants, users may encounter delays in the loading of the MicroSD. That said, if skydivers aren’t interested in investing in the pricey X3000 or the GoPro Hero 6, a suitable alternative is the considerably more affordable Yi 4K+.
