The sport of skydiving really began with French aeronaut Andre Jacques Garnerin in 1797. However, at that time instead of jumping from a plane, they were making descents from a hot air balloon. Crazy, isn’t it? While some jumpers use different aircraft including helicopters and Boeing 727s, most prefer to go the traditional route and simply exit from an airplane.
Skydiving.com Salt Lake City has the ability to arrange packages for all levels of adventurers. With our numerous and excellent partnered dropzones, we can confidently say we feature the most options in the area. For beginners we recommend that you start with a Tandem jump. Your qualified experts will guide you through your jump; from pre-jump prep on the ground to gearing you up before you jump, we work hard to make sure you have the amazing adventure you have been dreaming about. The experts will worry about the details, so that you can enjoy the ride and the breathtaking view of Utah’s mountainous landscape from the air. They’ll also help you get your feet back on the ground.
The jump will include a free fall – this includes the time you jump from the plane and lasts until you deploy the parachute. It usually lasts about a minute, depending on altitude and fall rate. It is here that the clothing you wear can come into play, the more loose items can slow the fall as they are resistant to the air. That means that you’ll be heading back to earth at a speed of about 110 to 130 miles per hour!

The sport of skydiving traces its history to the time when French aeronaut Andre Jacques Garnerin jumped from a hot air balloon. That was in 1797. We have refined our sport so that, while some jumpers like to try diving from different aircraft including helicopters and Boeing 727s, we prefer to go the traditional route and simply exit from an airplane. We’re not alone either! The United States Parachute Association estimates that about 500,000 people in the United States try skydiving for the first time every year.
Tandem Skydive jumps are the most popular – and most recommended – for first time skydivers. It is one of the best ways to get a feel for the sport without having to complete hours of training. The experience involves a jumper being attached to the instructor with a harness, and both people rely on the same parachute. This is the method that is used for beginner jumpers so they can learn the ropes as they jump, so to speak. Because the jumper is attached to the instructor, there is minimal need for pre-jump classes but there will be some training involved. Skydiving is more complicated than it looks and you’ll need to know a few basics before you head up.
When you arrive at the location, you will attend a tutorial that includes the rules and other important things to know before you head up into the sky. While it may look easy, skydiving is actually a sport and you’ll need to learn some skills before you can start. This will include some one-on-one time with an expert Tandem instructor. Here you will be taught the proper way to exit the airplane and may even learn about some maneuvers to do in free fall or how to deploy the main canopy. But fear not, you will not be responsible for the parachute during a Tandem jump.
Your instructor will then check your gear and strap it on. Tandem skydiving calls for some different gear from other skydiving activities. In Tandem jumping, a drogue parachute is released shortly after leaving the aircraft which helps decrease the terminal velocity of the skydiver. While this may sound a little technical, all you need to know is that it deploys your parachute correctly and makes the skydive last longer. If you’ve chosen the videographer package, it also helps get the best footage of your experience.
Once you are geared up, you and your Tandem instructor will head over to the plane and get some altitude. At about 10,000 to 14,000 feet up, the door will open and you’ll get strapped onto your instructor. Depending on how many others are jumping that day, you many find yourself slowly being guided towards the open door.
Then, the moment of exhilaration happens as you and your Tandem instructor leap out of the plane. One of the major benefits of this jump is that you can focus more on the thrill and less on the practical stuff.
The first minute after you leave the plane you are simply falling – free falling. This means you will be falling towards the ground without the help of a parachute. You’ll be traveling anywhere from 110 to 130 miles per hour!
When it is time, the instructor will engage the chute. This will begin the slow glide back to the ground. Well, as slow as you can expect after you jump out of a plane. In total the trip can take up to eight mind-blowing minutes. The speed will slow after your instructor opens the parachute. As you sail back down to the ground, you’ll have time to take in the spectacular view and contemplate your place in the world. It is like nothing you have ever seen, and unless you jump again, nothing you will ever see again. Can’t you just taste it?
While considered an extreme sport, given that it takes a lot of guts to look down 14,000 feet and jump out of a plane, the adrenaline kick makes it all worthwhile.
While the age requirements may be different in other countries, you need to be 18 years and older before you can legally Tandem jump in the United States.
If you are ready to take your thrill to the next level, you’ll want to attend an advanced training sessions. In these programs, you will learn what it takes to jump without the help of a tandem instructor. That’s right. Solo. Once you complete a training program, your rewards is your United States Parachute Association certification. Guess what that gets you? It is your ticket to jump at any USPA-approved skydiving center, including our 80+ affiliate locations. You’ll be able to see what it is like to skydive nearly anywhere, from Florida to California! Plus, this program is designed to be the quickest one to get you in the air and jumping solo.
There are two methods to learning to skydive solo and both include on the ground and in the air training. The first method is the Accelerated Free Fall method; the second training program we would recommend is the Tandem Progression method, which also incorporates Accelerated Free Fall training. You will be given about five to six hours of on-the-ground training. This will all be in preparation for your independent jumps. You will learn the ins and outs of proper jump techniques, how to use your parachute and the best body position and other maneuvers. You will receive intense one-on-one training with a certified instructor. Once you have done your course work, it will be time to put what you’ve learned to the test.
In the air you’ll be guided by certified instructors until you have developed the skills to be able to jump unguided. These instructors have all been through the program as our affiliate dropzones only employ those who are USPA certified. They also have extensive training experience so you can be sure they won’t forget a thing!
The most common method of training is the Accelerated Free Fall program.
This program is designed to prepare jumpers with practical knowledge combined with experience. It begins with intense one-on-one training on the ground with a certified, experienced instructor. Once you understand the basics, your instructors will take you up and guide you through your first three jumps. They will utilize the Harness-Hold Training (HHT) method, which is exactly what it sounds like. The instructor will hold the harness while giving the student jumper enough control over the experience. In the event the student has trouble deploying the parachute, the instructor is right there to assist.
Once the student has successfully learned to deploy the chute, the next level of training is referred to as release dive. The instructor will still hold the harness for a short time and then release the student so they can improve their jump skills.
The student will then progress through the rest of the eight-level program, learning maneuvers and jump skills, starting with 90-degree maneuvers and working up to 360-degree maneuvers.
The first level is mostly an introduction. Students draw on the knowledge learned in this first level as they learn to skydive safely and properly. Students have to complete a checklist before they can advance to the next level. It will involve equipment checks, and students will be shown how to examine the main pilot parachute, cutaway handle and reserve ripcord. Students will also review proper aircraft exit technique. This level includes your first jump under the supervision of instructors.
Level two is a second jump. The instructors will still be holding on as you jump but they will be looking for proof that you are using what you learned so far. They also expect you to demonstrate more confidence and fluidity at this level.
If the instructor feels confident in the student’s ability, the third level can be the first solo experience. Students will gain a better idea of how to maintain control through the free fall and will do an unassisted pull.
Level four will advance the student in their skill and comfort of the free fall. It will also reinforce what students have learned, and instructors will teach students how to conduct personal gear checks. This is also where it gets more fun. Students have to complete a 90-degree turn to both sides as they take their second solo dive.
In level five, students need to conduct a 360-degree turn, which should be no problem after completing the 90-degree turns on the previous dive.
Stepping the fun up a notch in level six, students do a front loop – or a forward flip – during the free fall. Another key skill in level six is tracking. This is the ability of the skydiver to be aware of other divers around them and to keep a safe distance from them.
In the next jump, level seven, students put together everything they have learned so far. They have to perform a front loop, a back loop and 360-degree turns as well as delta tracking.
The final jump, level eight, will be a demonstration of the student’s ability to solo jump. This will be an easy solo dive, pulling together everything that the student now knows. Both the student and instructor review a video of the jump. This marks the completion of AFF training.
If this sounds like the thrilling challenge you have been waiting for, don’t wait any longer!
A second way to earn your right to skydive solo with us is to go the Tandem Progression route. In this method there are three Tandem skydives combined with the Accelerated Free Fall training. While it is not the most common method of skydive training, some find this is a better way of learning to jump on their own.
The program will guide you through various Tandem jumps, allowing you to increase your confidence each time.
With each Tandem jump, the instructor will gradually allow you to take more control of the jump, helping you gain an understanding of the sport. Following your three tandem jumps you will transition into the Accelerated Free Fall training, which you do in eight levels. The Accelerated Free Fall training includes five to six hours of on-the-ground training with an instructor. This includes an introduction to skydiving as well as some focused one-on-one interactions between you and your instructor to help you grasp the basics of jumping. Once you have finished your on-the-ground prep, it will be time to take to the sky and test what you have learned. Although you won’t be strapped to an instructor as you were for the Tandem jumps, don’t be afraid, the instructor will hold onto your harness for the first three jumps. This helps ensure your safety and increases your confidence. As with the Tandem jump, the instructor will gradually allow you to take over the jump more and more as you move along.
Once you have gained some solo jump experience, the instructor will then start to use the release dive method. They will initially hold your harness as both of you exit the aircraft, but the instructor will release you at some point during the jump so you can improve your solo skills.
After you have worked your way through all eight levels, you will be considered to be a skillful solo skydiver and be awarded your USPA certification.
