More than likely, your mother never talked about skydiving. However, in the world of skydiving like when you were a child, safety comes in numbers. Specifically, you dive with an instructor who is responsible for the key elements of the jump and helps to keep you safe.
Tandem Skydiving is the most common approach to this experience, since it requires only a day’s worth of training for someone to jump out of an airplane while attached to an experienced instructor. You can go to the skydiving center, spend time learning the general rules and safety measures, as well as what to expect from the time you leave the ground in the airplane until you float back down. Then, your experience involves being harnessed to the instructor and going through with this unique and thrilling adventure. The item can be crossed off your bucket list, and you can be proud of your accomplishment.
When it comes to tandem skydiving, you can be age 18 or older and take to the skies. However, if you want to have the experience solo – just you and the parachute – you need to commit to multiple hours and over 20 jumps. That process takes a lot of time and effort on your part.
If your goal is simply to be able to say that you went skydiving, then the best option is tandem skydiving. This process involves minimal training and minimal responsibility. The instructor does the guiding and parachute pulling. You are along for the ride and can enjoy the experience and your ability to process falling through the air at high velocities until you are caught by a piece of fabric.
That still sounds amazing, right?
If that still sounds like an experience you have to have once before you die – which it should, since it combines adventure and defying death with a thrilling experience and falling through the air. That isn’t even to mention the fact that you jump from a perfectly functional airplane.
Some people ask why tandem skydiving is the way to go for novice jumpers. The answer is, in one word: safety. A novice with very minimal exposure to safety measures and what to do in case something goes wrong should not attempt to make a jump on his or her own.
Safety when skydiving is very important, since a wrong move or an issue can lead to serious injury or even death. The jump with an instructor provides reassurance of that safety. Instructors are required to have completed 500 skydives and have a minimum of three years of experience. They also have to pass a certification course in order to be able to complete tandem jumps. A master parachute license through the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, is the final piece to the puzzle for an instructor to be able to be in charge of his or her life and yours during a jump.
Therefore, you can be sure you are safe and your instructor is very experienced before you step out of the plane.
If you are 18 years of age and less than 225 pounds, you can join the ranks of those who have gone skydiving. Keep in mind it is important to wear comfortable clothes and skip the sandals in favor of sneakers. Your skydiving experience will start on the ground. You will learn some important aspects of the experience, from the time you leave the ground to the time your feet touch once again. While the instructor will be there to guide you during the jump, some safety aspects and important details must be imparted to you before you leave the ground.
For some people, skydiving is about overcoming a fear and being able to say you managed to accomplish a goal. However, some people take their first jump and realize that skydiving is an experience that they need to revisit on a regular basis. The rush of exhilaration and joy during the jump and the free fall are such strong feelings that you know you want to keep having those feelings and going back into the air to jump again and again.
If that is your plan, then the next step is to start training for solo jumps. This process involves either repeating your first tandem jump or moving on to an Accelerated Free Fall jump, which we discuss at length below. Either way, you are going into the air again and learn more about the skydiving world and the responsibilities of the individual jumping.
In order to jump at any USPA-certified skydiving center, you must earn a license. In order to do so, you need to complete 25 jumps and have an instructor sign off on a proficiency card. From there, you can earn a license, which is issued by the USPA. Then, you will be able to jump from any licensed skydiving center on your own.
For those who really want to learn how to jump on their own, the process of Accelerated Free Fall can help you move from tandem jumps attached to an instructor to jumps on your own from progressive heights and gain the experience you need to achieve a license from the USPA and be able to jump on your own at any USPA-certified skydiving center.
The process of Accelerated Free Fall training starts with jumps with two instructors. This is typically your first three jumps, and both instructors hold onto you firmly until you deploy your parachute. From there, you get to jump with only one instructor.
Typically, students in this program deploy the parachute at one mile, or 6,000 feet Above Ground Level (AGL). This is for the primary stages of learning. At later levels, the student can deploy the canopy at 5,000 AGL.
During a jump with one instructor, the student is reminded to pull the canopy by the instructor using hand signals. In the case the student fails to pull the cord, the instructor will put the student’s hand on the parachute cord physically. Then, if there are issues or the student struggles to accomplish the deployment, the instructor will pull the cord. There are also usually additional pull cords attached to equipment used by students in training. In the case that an instructor can not help and the student falls to a certain level, the Automatic Aviation Device attached to the equipment deploys the parachute. This provides optimal safety for the individual skydiving.
After the first few falls, a student will hopefully be able to show they are able to deploy their own parachute. If that is the case, the student is released by the instructor on different levels during the free fall. The student must show they have learned the Targeted Learning Objectives, or TLOs, for each stage of training before they can advance to the next stage.
While learning, a student must pass categories A through E in order to progress toward achieving a license. During those five categories, seven jumps must be completed. Categories F, G and H are completed as solo dives, although a rated instructor may accompany the student for these dives. There are also two “hop and pop” jumps required at different levels. All of this has to be completed, along with a total of 25 skydives, before the student can gain a signature from their instructor that they have completed the license requirements. After that, you can officially consider yourself a licensed skydiver and not a student.
For anyone who wants to include skydiving in their lifestyle, this is the best way to ensure you will be properly trained and capable of handling the experience on your own. Once you have gained a license, you can go to any USPA certified skydiving centers in the US and jump from a plane at that chosen location. Spice up your life with this fantastic learning experience.
If you want to learn to skydive on your own, but you aren’t ready to start diving out of the plane solo quite yet – trying tandem progression is the way to go. This method starts with three tandem skydives. On each progressive dive, you will learn more about the skydiving process and you will be able to take on more responsibility each time. Following the three tandem skydives, the Accelerated Free Fall method is employed. However, you may jump with only one instructor or you may jump with two instructors. Typically, you jump with two instructors until you show your capability to handle the skydiving responsibility on a greater scope. Then, you begin jumps with only one instructor.
The tandem progression method of learning to skydive starts with ground school. During this segment of training, you will learn emergency procedures, basics of the equipment, techniques related to free fall and procedures that are needed for canopy control. Once your instructor has determined you understand these elements of the jump, you move on to the tandem jumps. During the tandem jumps, education revolves around altitude monitoring, executing behaviors during free fall and even scenarios related to emergency situations. The instructor will provide hands-on experience for these situations without the additional stress of an actual emergency. Elements of the Accelerated Free Fall method, discussed above, are then employed to help you achieve a license.

The saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. However, when you are jumping from an airplane and falling through the air at an average of 60 m/s and at a speed of around 125 miles per hour when you have your arms and legs extended, that picture may not capture much of the experience. A video, however, is going to enable you to see yourself from another perspective, first of all. It is also going to allow you the chance to go back and relive the parachuting experience, even if you choose to never jump from an airplane again. You can sit back and impress friends and loved ones with your daring, enjoying faces as they watch a video of you doing something they will never dare to consider.
The chance to videotape your skydiving experience is important because it provides you the ability to capture that moment in time in a way your memories and your discussions with others will never be able to achieve. A video is like a time machine, guaranteed to transport you back to that day and that moment you jumped, those seconds spent falling and the very split second the parachute flies out behind you and your instructor, preventing injury or death. A chance to watch that video over and over is worth more than money.
The video packages are custom tailored to your skydiving experience. Therefore, it is very important to talk to a professional at Skydiving.com Salinas to arrange for a videotaping package and discuss the experience level for your parachuting choice. Videos can be taken by a videographer, who falls with you and captures the entire experience. They can also be captured via Go Pro, attached to your instructor. This gives a close-up view and a visual that is closer to what you actually experience during the free fall. The choice is yours, but talking to the professionals to make the appropriate arrangements is still a very important thing to do before you show up on the big day.
