Whether you are scared of heights like I am or not, for most people their first skydiving experience can be pretty intimidating, even downright scary. As someone who gets anxious getting close to a cliff or on a rollercoaster, I was definitely worried about my first skydiving experience. I didn’t know if I could go through with it. But with some preparation, I definitely felt ready and at ease going into my appointment. While nerves are still part of a thrill-seeking adventure like this, knowing what you’re facing makes the process go more smoothly and soothes fears.
Making the decision to go skydiving is both exciting and nerve wracking, and most people have questions about what to expect as a beginner. Here is some basic information you should know.
There are of course some general rules and suggestions to know about skydiving before making your reservation. Here are some of those:
- You must be 18 or older.
- You should take a valid form of I.D.
- Most places have a weight limit of 225 lb.
- Expect to wait several hours at the drop zone.
Attire and Belongings:
Knowing what to wear and what to do with your stuff is also important and can put you at ease knowing you are prepared. Here are some tips.
- Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes.
- Wear sturdy shoes. (no sandals or flip flops)
- Leave valuables inside your car.
- If you are someone who gets motion sick, consider taking a Dramamine.
- Make sure their goggles work with your eyewear if you wear glasses or contacts.
Most of the time you will be required to go on a tandem skydive on your first time skydiving. This is recommended even for the few places that will let you go alone. Having someone go with you is much safer and also will make it less scary for you.
As mentioned earlier, you will require training. This will take a couple hours and needs to be stressed again. It is essential to pay attention and be attentive through the whole training. Take this part seriously but also enjoy yourself and have fun getting to know your instructor. If you have a good rapport with them, it will make the experience better overall.
While skydiving is usually very safe, keep in mind that there are some risks involved. You should research these and ask the skydiving instructors about them beforehand. This way you can know what risks you are taking on and if you feel comfortable or not. You will only freefall for about a minute or so depending on the height of the jump.
And, most important of all, remember to have fun and enjoy yourself. With these tips in mind, your first skydiving experience is likely to be a great one.
More About Tandem Skydiving
Tandem skydiving is also sometimes referred to as tandem parachuting. In tandem skydiving, the skydiving instructor is harnessed to to the student and guides them through the whole skydiving process including the jump, freefall, piloting the canopy, and landing.
The great thing about tandem skydiving is that it involves relatively little training on the part of the student. This makes it ideal for first time jumpers. The tandem instructor is responsible for the safety and execution of the jump which will leave you, as the student, with a lot less pressure and anxiety, especially if you are embarking on your first skydiving adventure.
Also, many people talk about how much fun they had with their tandem instructor. Most instructor love introducing new people to the passion and excitement of skydiving and will help ease the tension by talking to you, cracking jokes, or walking you through the process of the dive.
Tandem Skydiving Equipment
The equipment involved in tandem skydiving is a bit different than other skydiving set ups. Modern tandem skydiving systems use what is called a drogue parachute that is deployed shortly after jumping from the plane. This type of parachute is used to decrease the velocity of the skydiver’s serves multiple functions. First, it ensures proper parachute deployment. Second, it lengthens the time spent in the air. And third, it allows the divers to fall in sync with the videographers.
Skydiving.com Monterey offers different video pacakges along with your dive. So, if you want to always remember your tandem dive, be sure to contact us about those options!
Tandem parachutes are also bigger in order to support the weight of two people. And in a tandem skydive, the parachute rig must have both a main and a reserve parachute along with an automatic activation device (AAD). An AAD is an added safety precaution that will deploy the reserve parachute on its own if it sense that the divers are still in freefall after dropping to a certain point in altitude.
In the United States, the FAA mandates that every potential instructor who participates in a tandem skydive must have at least 3 years of experiences, have participated in at least 500 skydives, and they must have a master parachute license issued by an organization that the FAA recognizes. On top of all these requirements, tandem skydiving instructors must also pass a certification course by the manufacturer of the parachute system that is being used in the jump. They must also have an FAA Class III Medical Certificate and finish the USPA Tandem Instructor Rating Course.
As you can see, all tandem skydiving instructors are highly qualified, certified experts in skydiving. You can relax knowing that your tandem instructor knows what they are doing and will keep you safe as well as having a great time.
Everything you need to know about taking your skydiving journey to the next level!
So, you’ve completed your first tandem dive? Or maybe you’re just a real go-getter? And you want to know what’s next? By taking your training to the next level, you can become a USPA certified solo skydiver. This is an exciting thought. And here at Slydiving.com Monterey we want ot make sure that you are trained the right way the first time. This is why all of our instructors are fully USPA certified and have extensive training and experience.
Another awesome thing about becoming certified is that you will be qualified to jump solo at any USPA approved skydiving center. All of the centers in Skydiving.com’s network are USPA certified, so you will be able to experience skydiving at locations all over the country.
Just imagine seeing different landscapes, from coastal waters, to pine forests, to windswept plains and everything inbetween, from a height of 12,000 or more feet! At Skydiving.com Monterey we want to get you started on the road to becoming a fully certified solo diver who has the freedom to experience the rush of free falling over and over again.
At Skydiving.com Monterey, we offer two different methods of skydiving training. The first is AFF, short for Accelerated Free Fall, and it is the most common method of training. The second method is called tandem progression.
The Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) program of training is Skydiving.com Monterey’s most common method of solo skydiving training. The reason this program is called accelerated is because it is the fastest way to become certified as a solo skydiver and experience solo freefall.
A fun fact about these jump is that most jumps are between 10,000 and 15,000 feet Above Ground Level. The acronym for Above Ground Level in skydiving terminology is AGL.
An advantage of participating in an AFF program is that one or two skydiving instructors are dedicated to one student. This means each student gets more hands-on help and guidance and is part of the reason why it is the fastest program. This is a really important advantage to an AFF program over a static line progression model of skydiving training.
List of Training Steps
- Ground School Instruction: Before ever getting in the air for a jump, the student will participate in ground school. The ground school portion is extensive and in-depth and will prepare the student as much as possible for the upcoming jump. The typical AFF ground school portion of the instruction will take about five hours.
- Harness Hold Training: This is the method used for the first few jumps .During the first few jumps, two instructors jump with the student. Though in some programs or in some situations these jumps are done with the student and only one instructor. During these jumps, the instructor will hold onto the student up until the point that the student deploys their parachute. This method is called “Harness Hold Training.” The instructors are not connected to the student except for the hold they have on them. So, after the student lets the parachute go, the instructor lets go and will deploy their own parachute. The main parachute(or canopy) for a student during an AFF program is generally deployed at 6000 feet Above Ground Level. In the case of something going wrong with the main chute, the instructor will signal with hand movements for the student to “pull.” If the student still can’t get the parachute to deploy, the instructor will help them by putting the student’s hand on the chute, and, if necessary, the instructor will pull the parachute for the student. Instructors are also prepared to pull the canopy anytime the student could be in danger. The gear that student’s use in an AFF program is usually equipped with extra pull handles so that instructors can more easily pull the chute if necessary.
- Release Dives: Students progress to this step when they show they can deploy their own parachute. After those first few jumps, if the instructor thinks the student is ready to move on from the first step of training, they will start releasing the student at subsequent levels as the student proves their aptitude. The instructors will evaluate in these jumps if the student has the ability to to maneuver in free fall without assistance. This portion of the training could be considered “level three.” All levels after level three employ a method known as the “release dive.” At this point, the instructor will let the student know that they will release the student at a certain point in the free fall, but, of course, the instructor will always remain close by in case the student still needs assistance. But, at this stage of the training, it can’t be guaranteed that the instructor will be able to dock and pull the chute. So, the student will need to have demonstrated that they have the skills necessary to pull the chute safely and correctly. During the solo time of these dives, the student will need to demonstrate proficiency in different aspects of a dive.
- Demonstrating final proficiency: Later levels of the training involve the instructor checking that the student can perform different maneuvers in the air such as flips, turns, and fall rate control. In every level of the training, the instructor will make sure that the student passes off the Targeted Learning Objectives for each level.
Once the student has shown they are capable and proficient at every level with the instructor, they will be able to go through certifications processes and be able to solo jump! While it does take some effort, getting to this stage is extremely rewarding. Here at Skydiving.com Monterey’s AFF program we can get you certified and soaring.
While Accelerated Free Fall training is the more common and preferred method for most people looking to train to become a solo skydiver, there is another option we offer at Skydiving.com Monterey. This method essentially combines tandem jumping along with the elements of the AFF program.
An advantage to using this method is that it can be a little more comfortable and slower paced introduction to solo skydiving. The regular AFF method may be a little intense for some people and seem like a lot in a short period of time. If you are a person who feels this way, than Tandem Progression is likely a great option for you.
While doing Tandem Progression training, the instructor gives you information on each tandem dive building upon the dives before as opposed to the accelerated method which relates large amounts of information in preparation for the dive.
After the tandem dives, the student will transition into the same method of training as is done in the regular AFF program. THe student will then wear their own skydiving rig and jump with two instructors.
Just like in the traditional AFF program, participants in Tandem Progression will participate in ground school training before the tandem jumps. So, the order of training would look something like this:
- Ground School
- Tandem Jumps(usually three)
- Accelerated freefall jumps with harness hold training (around two jumps)
- Accelerated freefall jumps with the release dive method (around two jumps)
- Accelerated freefall final jump demonstrating proficiency in areas such as rolls and landing the jump
Tandem Progression does take more time and jumps than the AFF program, but, for some people, it is just the right pace. If you are excited and really want to become a solo skydiver, but also feel a bit uneasy about jumping by yourself so quickly, than the Tandem Progression program with Skydiving.com Monterey is a viable, smart choice that we offer.
