Skydiving.com Albuquerque Brings the Land of Enchantment Alive for You!
Albuquerque sits at a mile above sea level (5,000-6,000 ft. elevation) which makes it a vacation spot people from all over the world come to enjoy. It features a high-desert climate, which means there are more than 310 sunny days and cool, crisp evenings a year in what is a four-season climate. There is occasionally snow in the winter and sunny days in the 90s during the summer. So, if you enjoy outdoor adventure vacations in the sun, Albuquerque is the place for you.
There are about a half-million people living in the city, and 900,000 in the greater Albuquerque metropolitan area. Albuquerque is a college town, since it is home to the University of New Mexico (UNM); it also houses Kirtland Air Force Base and the high-tech Sandia National Laboratories.
As well, just outside the western side of the city sits the Petroglyph National Monument, with its large symbolic icons carved into the sides of the mountain. The Sandia Mountains run alongside the eastern edge of the city, while the Manzano Mountains, southeast of the city, are also quite visible, framing Albuquerque with an arc of elevated peaks running across the northern tier of the city. So, the view from the air is beautiful and quite distinctive.
And if you’re in Albuquerque during early October, don’t miss the world’s largest gathering of hot-air balloons from around the globe in the colorful International Balloon Fiesta. Beyond this, Albuquerque is paradise for runners, bikers, and cyclists. The surrounding mountains provide accessible altitude training courses that crisscross the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. If you’re up for it, there are challenging trails you can hike or run to the top of the 10,678-foot Sandia Peak. So, there is plenty of room for runners, cyclists, and even hikers to take advantage of these trails.
For those who prefer flatter terrain, there are interconnected trails available throughout Albuquerque, NM. One notable trail is the 16-mile multi-use Paseo del Bosque Trail that is widely used by walkers, runners, cyclists, in line skaters, and even horseback riders. Sunset Magazine has rated Paseo del Bosque as one of the 20 Best Bike Paths in the West. For a list of activities and festivals happening throughout the year, check out ABQ365 for events from art shows and chocolate and coffee fests, to theater and native American Indian festivals. Remember, when you’re in Albuquerque, plan to be active!

Welcome to Skydiving.com Albuquerque and our partnered dropzones full of thoroughly trained skydiving professionals who are committed to your safety and enjoyment of your skydiving experience. If you’ve never skydived before, let us tell you why Tandem skydiving makes so much sense. Tandem skydiving maximizes safety and amplifies excitement because you’re tethered to an experienced Tandem master who will guide you through the experience. You’re not alone.
In a Tandem skydive, you’ll be strapped to a skydiving instructor from the moment the aircraft door opens to the very end of the six or seven-minute jump and you touch that bittersweet soil. There’ll be no mistakes. Your Tandem master will make sure you’re properly aligned and that from the moment you step out of the aircraft, you’re falling the correct way. And for a first timer, you want that confidence. No worries. Which allows you to forget the mechanics of the dive and focus on enjoying it. You won’t even realize you’ve reached 5,000 feet until the parachute deploys. You can concentrate on the raw excitement of lunging toward Earth. Perhaps, when you’re up that high you’ll feel closer to God. Any wonder everywhere you glance you’ll be inundated by the beauty of the land of enchantment. It’s like a buffet table in a fine restaurant and you can choose anything you want but you can’t decide because everything looks . . . delicious.
So, you arrive at our Skydiving.com Albuquerque affiliate drop zone. You’re ready to begin. First things first, you sign the standard legal waiver before you can jump. It’s a document every skydiving business asks its customers to sign, because it acknowledges what you already understand, that skydiving is so exciting because there is a risk. You’ll work with an instructor all of whom have years of skydiving experience and have passed a series of safety certification courses required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Each instructor has skydived at least 500 times, as required by the FAA.
And that is not all. Every instructor at our partner locations has applied for their Master Parachute License and are licensed by the FAA to engage in every kind of Tandem jump allowed. Add to this they all have completed their training for the FAA Class III Medical Certificate and a United States Parachute Association (USPA) Tandem Instructor Rating Course. If this seems like a lot, maybe it is, but it also is why we can say that safety is always a priority.
We welcome you to come down to a Skydiving.com Albuquerque affiliate drop zone and see about our safety procedures for yourself. Talk to a instructor. To other customers. Touch the gear. Ask us as many questions as you feel are necessary to convince you that our partners are serious about your safety. Back to game day, you’re here early for your pre-flight safety course that usually last 25 to 30 minutes. Your Tandem jump will not begin until you have completed the pre-flight safety course and your Tandem master agrees that you’re ready.
Once you are, you put on your gear. Your Tandem master will help you on with the harness that will connect you both once the jump begins, and then he will double check the fit to make sure that it’s just right. Once this safety check is done, you’re just about ready to board the aircraft for the climb to 14,000 feet.
As you ascend to 14,000, you may not be ready to take that first step yet, but your Tandem master will help you muster the courage when the time comes. Don’t worry, if you start to feel nervous. Everyone experiences a rush of euphoria the closer they get to the moment. You’ve almost reached 14,000. Your body is shaking with elation. Suddenly you understand what the ‘land of enchantment,’ means. You relax a bit. Hear your instructor’s voice calm you. Finally, almost at 14,000, you feel your Tandem master hook up. You head to the door. Feel the wind rush in. You look out. The landscape is intoxicating. You’re ready. You’re confident. Still, you can feel the butterflies. Lots of butterflies.
Your Tandem master says, “It’s time. Go.” You’re scared, but ready as you step out of the plane. Within seconds you’re falling at 120 miles per hour. It’s spectacular up here. For the first time in your life, your feet are not on the ground. It’s a weird sensation. But this dive has already been as spectacular as you hoped it might be. And you still have a way to go.
Tandem Skydiving: Double Your Dopamine!
You’re ready to grow. And skydiving is an important part of the new you. You want to skydive the way you’ve done everything else in your life. With precision. With dedication. So, you’ve called Skydiving.com Albuquerque to inquire about Advanced Skydiving Training. Our large network of partnered dropzones offer customized programs to meet your needs.
We’ll start you off on Level One training with ground instruction and instructor-led skydives intended to get you into the sky as quickly and safely as possible. We will you teach you correct body positions, how to deploy the canopy, and flying yourself to the ground. Once you have mastered these skills to the satisfaction of your instructor, you will attend your first Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) class skydive with two instructors who will jump with you to offer suggestions and safety tips as you jump, make sure you’re safe, and grade your performance. Depending on what is said, you will either move ahead or go back over the lessons to get them right, working on perfecting the way you manipulate your movements as you’re jumping.
And as you move ahead to Level Two and beyond (there are seven levels of AFF training), you will learn more advanced skill-sets and procedures like gear checks, the proper packing of parachutes, and maneuvers to attain flight stability, such as back loops, flips, and gliding. It should also be added, that there is no fixed timeframe. You move forward at your own pace. The goal is to complete your AFF training, so you will hold a USPA certified solo skydiver certification. You’ll be able to jump solo at any of the skydiving facilities in our network of affiliates, all of which are USPA approved skydiving centers. Or, solo dive whenever you want, wherever you want, safely.
Advanced Free Fall Training (AFF) is a rigorous training regimen for those who want to eventually attain a USPA certified solo skydiver certification which will allow them to dive solo, wherever and whenever they so desire. But to reach this goal, each one of the seven levels of accomplishment must be successfully navigated by the student. Students will work closely with their instructors, who will teach them basics before they go up into the air together, and fall beside the student to make sure the student is physically in control of him/herself during the jump, deploys the parachute at 5,000 feet, and any other noticeable warning signs that should be addressed during the dive. Should there be an issue deploying the parachute at 5,000 feet, the instructors will use hand signals to remind students to deploy. And if the hand signals do not seem to be working, then they will physically place the student’s hand on the parachute release. Deploying the parachute is a critical lesson to master if a student wants to skydive solo.
Then there are the physical positions and movements that must be mastered to regain balance in the air should air currents or wind shear throw the diver into a spin or into a fall without bodily control. These lessons in body control form many of the intermediate levels of knowledge that must be learned with each new jump before proceeding to the next level. Understanding the art of body control as a student plunges to earth is essential for a safe dive. So, mastering flips, turns, and free fall positions are absolute musts. And before one can be certified as a USPA skydiver, he or she will have to demonstrate repeated mastery of the physical moves throughout the later phases of the training process. For with mastery, comes safety and control.
Skydiving.com Albuquerque affiliates do not typically require you to follow any arbitrary timetable. A program can be scheduled to fit your personal needs. There is one proviso, though, that you have 30 days to complete each level in the program. You cannot take six months to complete any of the seven levels.
The first level is the most popular level of the AFF program. Why? Because you will learn enough in the first level of AFF training to dive solo without a Tandem partner, which is what most people want. Independence. Telling themselves, “You can do it. Watch.” And then go up to 14,000 feet, get themselves ready, and step out of the aircraft. Alone.
If you decide you want to master all the movements of the dive, then you must complete the seven levels of the AFF course. As you complete each level, you’ll learn a different diving maneuver, after each dive is over, your instructor will discuss what went well and what still needs work. After you complete the course, you’ll receive the library of videos so you can review them whenever necessary.
In the end, don’t worry. You can always retake any level of AFF training, even the first level, to re-master a skill. Your expert skydiving instructors will work closely with you until you’re ready. The important point is that Skydiving.com Albuquerque is your teammate in this process. We want you to succeed. That’s the Skydiving.com Albuquerque advantage.
Tandem Progression takes the Tandem skydive to a higher level. Not 20,000 feet, but to a more comprehensive understanding of skydiving safety and, eventually, to a slightly different path to solo skydiving.
Tandem Progression is three Tandem skydives married to the methodology of the Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) training program. It’s a more gradual introduction to solo skydiving. With each successive jump, the Skydiving.com Albuquerque instructor will give the student more responsibilities.
They begin in ‘ground school’ learning hands-on how to perform simulated emergency procedures, as well as canopy control procedures, free fall techniques, equipment basics, and other relevant topics. AFF training jumps commence after this.
Students will jump solo alongside two instructors in closely watched free fall. From here on it’s the same procedure as an AFF program.
Skydiving procedures like free fall maneuvers, monitoring altitude, and deploying the parachute at 5,000 feet are closely evaluated. And in the last phase of training, students will be expected to demonstrate mastery of all the skydiving procedures in the air.
Depending on the student, those who need more assistance will be offered more, and those who are ready to add more skills may be offered the chance to develop exit strategies from an aircraft.
All students will be working towards passing an A-License check-dive after completing 25 jumps.
